The WeatherVelo MODE is a cabin-cycle or "velomobile". It is intended as an alternative to a bicycle, for people would like weather protection and stability. Pedalling is assisted by an electric motor, but power and speed are deliberately restricted so that the MODE remains legally a bicycle (details below). Currently there is one prototype in Britain, undergoing evaluation. Therefore, specification is subject to change.

Restricted power (250W continuous) and speed (15mph) and weight (under 60kg with test battery) mean that the MODE prototype is legally classified as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle in Britain, so it is exempt from registration (number plate, tax disc) and the rider does not need a licence, nor insurance - although inexpensive third party cover is recommended. Exempt from the London congestion charge.
The European Union is currently revising the relevant Directive for three-wheel vehicles. However, the British Department for Transport has yet to bring GB regulations into line with the existing Directive, introduced in 2002. Until these issues are resolved at a national and European level, the commercial viability of the MODE and other innovative vehicles remains unclear.
